Nearly a full year has passed since the second phase of this project began and it is finally complete. The time log reported 585 hours!

But this was more than a typical house re-paint. Along the way it morphed into an exterior restoration. Three parting words: Glad it's done.

All the Douglas Fir trim boards were replaced with PVC millwork and a fresh coat of Satin Yellow was sprayed on the roll up door. Four faux (simulated) windows were added (simple screw-on installation). Looks great!

Plus new weatherstripping, track rollers, bearings, and torsion springs were installed on the roll-up door. Good as new.

Date: Jun 30, 2017

The 30 year old victorian screen door was removed and all the trim was replaced with decorative millwork. A fresh coat of blue-gray color was applied and the old dated lockset was replaced.

The new millwork is made of polyurethane rather than wood so it should last a long time. It's made by Fypon. Here's what was installed:
Two coats of yellow went on next.

Up until now I have been using Zinsser CoverStain oil based primer. But on this wall I switched to Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 latex based primer. I like the durability of the oil based formulas but the latex primer's water clean up is the reason for the switch.

Date: Jun 19, 2017

That 32' ladder is heavy and a pain to move around, but its high capacity commercial rating provides good stability.

Of course the weather continues to mess with me. The short break from the endless rain has now morphed into "Stay Indoors, Excessive Heat" warnings from the local weather reporters. I can't catch a break!

Ladders would not fit because of the five foot high hedge. So a single stage of scaffolding was set up. This photo was taken after all the tedious scraping and sanding.

It's now April 2017 and the two-story section is nearly complete. This should have been done four months ago!

The scaffolding came down today. Primer is being applied to the area at the top of the ladder that held the scaffold's post brackets. Two coats of yellow will go over the primer in the morning.

The difficult part of this paint job is officially over. There's still a lot of wood that needs scraping/sanding/priming but I can reach it all from my 24' and 32' ladders.

You can see some of the ongoing effort at the right side of the photo.

Date: Apr 29, 2017
